Virginia DMV Driver's Manual to prepare for the Written test.
If you are a non-resident temporarily living in Virginia, you may drive with your home state or country driver's license and license plates for no more than six months.

What are some documents that are acceptable as proof of Virginia residency? Original monthly bank statement no more than 2 months old Certified transcript from an accredited U.S. school (Get it from Registrars office) Residential lease agreement Utility bill with the applicant's name and address no more than 2 months old IRS W-2 no more than 8 months old or Payroll stub issued within 2 months of application.

Step 1: Take all the required documents to your local DMV.
Step 2: You can select an appointment from the DMV website [Link](https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/appointments). This is recommended, so you don't have to wait in line.
Step 3: When you walk in you do to the welcome counter and tell them you are there to apply for new license. They will give you a form to fill.
Step 4: Wait for you number to be called and go to the right counter. At the counter they will ask for all the documents. If your documents are complete, you can immediately take the written exam on a computer. You will also do a vision test. Prepare for the written test before you go to DMV. Step 5: If you pass the written test, you will be given a print out. You will receive your Learner's Permit in the mail. You will pay approximately $45
Step 6: A learner's permit lets you drive a vehicle when a licensed driver is seated beside you. The licensed driver must be at least 21 years old.
Step 7: You need to hold a learner’s permit for 60 days before you can get your driver’s license.
Step 8: Prepare for Road Skills Test.
Step 9: On the day of the test:
a) You must provide a vehicle for the test. b) The vehicle must have: a valid safety inspection sticker, license plates and registration card working brakes, safety belts, horn, lights, turn signals, mirrors and speedometer. C) In-Car Maneuvers Observation Record is required at the time of testing. Print and fill this form. D) Bring your learner's permit with you.
